The Burren and the Aran Islands A Walking Guide

The book was written by Tony Kirby of Heart of Burren Walks and was published in May 2009 by Collins Press.

Tony Kirby has put his considerable experience as a walking guide to great use in compiling an easy-to-use guide, which introduces the best walks in the Burren and the Aran Islands. From the rugged interior to the spectacular coastal scenery, from challenging upland walks to shorter road and waterside walks, this is a guide to some of the best walking routes in the region.

Each route is prefaced with a quick-reference summary and is illustrated with a colour map. Descriptions include detailed access information while points of interest (geology, flora, fauna, history, farming and folklore) are highlighted in order to enhance the walkers’ enjoyment and appreciation of this distinctive landscape. A revised edition of the book was published in May 2014.

Thanks again for one of the most memorable outings in our 6 visits to Ireland. You are a gifted guide and educator and I wish you well. Keep up the great Burren walks — you are an inspiration.

The guided Burren walk with Tony was the highlight of my holiday in Ireland. In the course of a magic afternoon, Tony took us on an inspirational journey through prehistory, geology, ecology, social history, culture, flora, fauna, poetry, and so much more. I was left not only with a wealth of information and insight, but also a sense of wonder at the depth of Tony’s knowledge, passion and respect for all aspects of this unique landscape.
